What is the function of the footer?

O the role of the footer goes beyond the aesthetic part, as it is also related to the functionality of the environment. By choosing the right product, it is possible to make the room more interesting and practical. Next, understand some functions that are related to footer installation.

Finishing

It's no use being careful with the wall cladding, if they don't have the perfect finish. The function of the footer is, precisely, to guarantee an adequate result in this regard.

it serves to add volume, height and texture to the environment, giving other dimensions to the coating. It can also include modern or classic details, composing with other elements, such as boiserie format finishes.

Site Durability

Another important point is that the baseboard serves as a protective element for the walls and, depending on the case, even the floor. That's because it works as an item of “protection” in relation to the junction between wall and floor.

It is something that avoids several problems, such as the accumulation of dirt in the environment or the breaking of the floor at these points. Therefore, it is an essential alternative to maintain the beauty and finish of the room for longer.

Prevent impacts

Including, durability is related to the ability to prevent impacts from occurring against the wall. When using a broom, dragging a piece of furniture or using an appliance, a strong impact against the wall may occur.

This damages its structure and finish, which affects the entire look. Therefore, the baseboard acts as a barrier and prevents this from happening. In apartments, it is a way to reduce the propagation of noise at these points.

What materials are needed?

To achieve the perfect installation, it is essential have quality materials and that meet all requirements. Therefore, we recommend using the following accessories:

  • installation for masonry walls: Cola Santa Luzia next to Bucha T Santa Luzia;
  • installation on other surfaces: Santa Luzia Super Adhesive Glue and Santa Luzia Double-Sided Tape;
  • premium finishing putty or Santa Luzia Caulker;
  • footer bars.

It is noteworthy that for apartments that do not accept holes in masonry walls, we suggest the use of Double Sided Santa Luzia Tape instead of the T Bucha Santa Luzia.

In addition, it is necessary have some equipment and tools that help in carrying out the activity. Are they:

  • hammer;
  • measuring tape or meter;
  • drill with drill;
  • rubber mallet;
  • electric or hand saw.

How to remove an old footer?

Before starting the footer installation process, there are two options — remove the old finish or use reform footers. Therefore, you need to be careful to ensure that everything happens correctly.

In general, it depends on the finishing material. Porcelain tile baseboards can usually only be removed if they are broken, taking care not to affect the wall.

The wooden model can be uninstalled with the support of a spatula, which will serve as a lever for the hammer. However, it is essential to do everything carefully to avoid damage.

In fact, that's why the polystyrene skirting is the best solution. Besides being sustainable, it offers quick installation and a simple, effortless later withdrawal.

How to install?

With the previous baseboard uninstalled, and the surface totally clean and prepared, it's time to go to baseboard installation. The process must be done on a completely clean, dry and level surface. Ready to get started? See what the essential steps are!

Cut a skirting guide

Right at the beginning, it is necessary create a guide with a piece of footer bar (10 to 15 cm) to drill the exact location of the tear that will be the basis for positioning the hole on the wall, which will receive the T-bushing, to act as an initial shield for fixing the bar (if you use double-sided tape, you will not need to do these procedures). After cutting a small rectangle, make a hole at the top, where the fixation will take place.

Position the guide flush with the wall, exactly as the baseboard will look. Mark with a pencil and repeat the process every 40 cm, average.

Fix the dowels and nails

Then, with the help of the guide as support, use the drill at the points marked in pencil. Then place the T-bushings and fix them properly, horizontally. It's important that everything is on exactly the same level—this is where the importance of the guide comes into play.

With the bushings in place, position the headless nails with the help of the hammer. They must completely fill the bushing without sticking out.

Apply glue to the footer bar

With the wall prepared, it's time to apply two lines of Cola Santa Luzia on the back of the baseboard. If he has more than 20 centimeters, it is interesting that three lines are placed. Remembering that on different masonry walls, it is necessary to use double-sided tape and super adhesive Santa Luzia

So the bar should be placed over the line of wall dowels. Fix it exactly in position and you will feel the proper fit. If you want to fix even more, use the rubber mallet.

Is important place a dowel at the fitting points between two bars, as this will make the fixture linear.

Make cuts in the footer bar to adjust

The footer bars have a standard length of 2.40 linear meters. If your room is bigger, it will be critical to join more than one and probably cut some pieces, right? The ideal is use the saw to make precise cuts and ensure a good finish on the seams.

In the case of installing a polystyrene skirting board, it is best to make a quick cut that avoids burrs, in general. It is also essential to be concerned with making the cut at 45°, so that the fit is perfect, especially on corners.

Regarding the finishing of the cuts, it is possible to join two pieces with an angle of 45º or use the calls terminals. They serve to “hide” the seam and ensure a finished look facilitating installation.

Finish with premium putty or Santa Luzia Caulker

Once you've finished fixing the wall, it's time to take care of the final finish of the baseboard installation. In this case, the ideal is to use premium putty or caulking in the "seams" and at the top of the baseboard.

Just apply on these points and remove excess, which gives a proper finishing touch. If you want, it is possible to carry out a painting, but the product must already be installed at that moment.

If, even so, you don't feel confident to do it yourself, just hire a specialized professional. Just make sure it will be able to take good care of the baseboard and ensure the best installation.

THE baseboard installation is no mystery, requiring attention in the order and execution of steps.
